À travers toute l’Europe l’écart entre les personnes peu scolarisées et celles très cultivées se creuse. D’un côté, les cosmopolites qui sirotent leur verre de chardonnay en vantant les mérites de la mondialisation, alors que de l’autre côté une classe « tatouée » se saoûle des chansons populaires locales et, souvent, soutient de nouvelles formes de nationalismes. Les travailleurs peu qualifiés ont du mal à pénétrer au parlement. Leur majorité démographique est réduite à une minorité démocratique. Plus que quiconque, les partis populistes portent aujourd’hui la voix des personnes peu qualifiées dans nos sociétés. Selon David Van Reybrouck, le populisme n’est pas nécessairement un danger pour la démocratie. Ce populisme exprime, parfois maladroitement, un désir constant d’engagement politique de citoyens peu instruits. Il est devenu essentiel de se pencher sérieusement sur les réflexions que l’auteur soulève. Un meilleur populisme est nécessaire, pas forcément moins de populisme…

De ideologieën die ons politieke landschap en onze maatschappij hebben bepaald - christen-democratie, liberalisme, socialisme, Vlaams-nationalisme en ecologisme - staan volop in de belangstelling, maar tegelijk is het bijna vanzelfsprekend geworden om alles wat geïdeologiseerd is enigszins denigrerend te bejegenen. Toch zijn deze ideologieën in belangrijke mate bepalend geweest voor de vormgeving van onze moderne democratische instellingen (onderwijs, justitie, sociale zekerheid) en voor de wijze waarop de burger tegen de samenleving aankijkt. In dit werk proberen een aantal eminente academici en (voormalige) politieke medewerkers, die deze ideologieën door en door en soms van binnenuit kennen, een antwoord te geven op een reeks fundamentele vragen: Hoe vonden deze ideologieën uitdrukking in de Belgische en Vlaamse politiek? In welke richting zijn de partijen opgeschoven? Hoe dient de hedendaagse tendens tot partijvernieuwing begrepen te worden? Dringt een herwaardering van de traditionele ideologieën zich op? Of dienen er nieuwe, 'adequatere' ideologieën ontwikkeld te worden, die beter aangepast zijn aan de noden van de huidige samenleving? Na een inleidend essay over het fenomeen 'politieke ideologieën' en de tendensen waaraan het onderhevig is, worden de respectievelijke ideologieën behandeld in vijf hoofdstukken. Telkens wordt de maatschappelijke context beschreven waarin die ideologie tot stand kwam, hoe ze in de Belgische en Vlaamse samenleving geconcretiseerd werd, welke evoluties zich binnen het ideologische denken van de Vlaamse partijen hebben voorgedaan (partijvernieuwing, partijversnippering, kartelvorming). Tot slot wordt ook ingegaan op de vraag of ideologie er nog wel toe doet. Of is het een verzameling geworden van algemene value concepts waar iedereen wel achter kan staan?
